Gold Glove Award

Annual recognition for the best defensive player at each position, voted by MLB managers and coaches.

The Gold Glove Award has been presented annually since 1957 by Rawlings, in partnership with MLB. Managers and coaches vote for the best defensive player at each position in each league, with former players joining the vote beginning in 2010 through the addition of the SABR Defensive Index (SDI) component.

Historically, Gold Gloves were criticized for rewarding reputation over actual defensive performance — high-average hitters often won over superior fielders. The addition of the SDI, which incorporates advanced defensive metrics, has improved accuracy.

For Hall of Fame voting, multiple Gold Gloves signal defensive excellence and longevity. A player who combined offensive production (strong WAR, HR, OPS) with 5+ Gold Gloves is considered a complete player, which resonates strongly with voters. AllFame counts Gold Gloves in the Awards & Selections dimension.
